5. Abstract: Health and Stress Management through Nadi Shodhan Pranayama (Alternate Nostril Breathing): An Analysis

India has long been heralded as a pioneer in alternative therapies for health and wellness. Yoga is the most renowned therapy from India that has gained international popularity and repute. Now-a-days health disorders like heart diseases, respiratory problems, obesity and mental problems are on the rise throughout the world. One of the most important causes of all these problems is stress. Stress is a response to a real or imagined event which alters the normal functioning of the body. It is body’s natural reaction to both the physical and psychological changes. Accordingly, it produces a number of undesirable effects, again at physical as well as at mental level. This paper introduces the concept of pranayama (a yogic technique that involves controlled deep rhythmic breathing). The underlying principle of pranayama is that the relation between emotion and breathing is two way i.e. not only emotions have affect on breathing but controlled rhythmic breathing has positive effects on emotions too. We selected a group of subjects who volunteered to practise nadi shodhan pranayama (alternate nostril breathing) for three months. We applied the introspection (subjective observation) method of Psychology and analyzed the various traits on Likert’s five point psychometric scale. We applied t-test for statistical investigation. We observed that 75% of the subjects gained in terms of health, 80% in terms of memory power, 75% in terms of mental stress relief and 90% in terms of physical relaxation.

Observations :Health and Stress Management through Nadi Shodhan Pranayama (Alternate Nostril Breathing): An Analysis

  • Improved Health level of 75% students has been observed after Pranayama.
  • 80% students have experienced better state of Memory Power after Pranayama.
  • Mental Stress level of 75% students has been decreased after Pranayama.
  • State of Physical Relaxation of 90% students has been observed after Pranayama.

Teaching Indian Psychology

Dear friends,

As some of you may be aware, we are conducting next week

a collaborative workshop on teaching Indian Psychology.

With the help of the participants to this course, we have created on the IPI website,

a new web-page especially devoted to Teaching Indian Psychology.

This web-page (which can be reached from the "articles" menu) has links to the syllabi and recommended reading lists of a number of Indian Psychology Courses offered at various Indian Universities.

It has a special section with literature on how to do research in Indian Psychology.

The list is still far from complete, so:

If you are aware of other places where IP-related courses are offered

(whether in India or elsewhere), please let us know.

~~

If you have not done so recently, please also have a look at our revamped list of articles sorted on subject.

Warm regards,

Book Launch - "More Teaching Stories"

Book Launch - "More Teaching Stories"

Selected And Interpreted by Ms. Jamuna Rangachari,
Illustrated by Mr. Pankuj Parashar
Followed by a panel discussion on
"The Story Is The Shortest Distance Between You And The Truth"
Moderator: Mr. Rajiv Mehrotra
Panelists: Maulana Wahiduddin Khan, Swami Agnivesh, Ms. Jamuna Rangachari,
Shri DR Kaarthikeyan and Mr. Anil Bhatnagar.

Teaching stories are not simple fables which have a simple 'moral' for the reader. They are not merely fairy tales that muse. Rather, they are snippets of life designed to show effective ways of defining and responding to common life experiences, such stories can be told and retold, visited and revisited, meditated upon as they themselves may change shape, revealing themselves variously in different circumstances and at different stages of human development, and hence a child and a adult will enjoy it at their own levels and exposure.

Which is why they are being used in education, development and motivation all over the world at all levels of growth. For, what is truly fascinating is the fact that the inferences one gets, as in many real life dilemmas and situations, is not a simple right or wrong, but a many layered contextual expression of life with all its complexities in place.

The fact is, in our quest to acquire more and more knowledge, we hardly have time to digest, reflect and assimilate. It is here that teaching stories are the best tool to wisdom as they entertain and educate seamlessly. While we may not remember the spiritual tenet the story seeks to illustrate, the story and through it, the tenet remains with us.

Meet YOURSELF

Meet YOURSELF

Life begins today for the person who meets himself at whatever age this great event occurs . Life, deep and full wells up and from that time on it can truly be said one lives. Strangely enough multitude of men and women are born, spend their days and die, never having really known themselves. They come and go on the human scene. The possessors of unrealized powers which never quite fine expression of such holms pathetically declared THEY DIED WITH ALL THEIR MUSIC IN THEM. And now it is up to you to decide what kind of life you want to live.

...I guess you are right, this is an old question but answer is elusive. The big issue here is choices; does one make a choice or accept a choice made on one's behalf?

There are so many mixed messages. Some messages one hears and others one gets by observation and learning, but one is never in a position to make a beneficial interpretation. Before long one is deeply embedded in a chorus composed by others. Composers come in form of parents, society, authorities, economic activities and so forth.

How do you advice here? Where and when does one meet self?

Dr Desh Raj Sirswal # 8. February 2011, 16:25

You are right Sir. I know there are many liabilities and boundations with a man. Most of the time we can find those peoples who have so many abilities to do best but they need proper guidance on time. In our tradition it is a thinking that if someone wants a peaceful and happy life he should do his work with fully intentionally and try to get exicellence in work. Man can know himself by his duty or with his identity. Thanks

Moefi (mor air fee) # 8. February 2011, 17:10

...my fellow thinker, work is but one element one element if one is to meet oneself. Do you know that in some societies professions are inherited.

If I read you properly, allow me to contend that people unlike insects which specialize, are well endowed. If a man has to find himself, he cannot be defined by his profession because if we use this model the son of a court jester can never become an orator.

A woman's duty may be to be a caregiver but does it mean that she shouldn't trade?

A man might be soldier but what is the limit if he is an athlete, can write, teach, orate, draw, sell and so forth. To meet himself he can do all these and more.

Please set me straight.

Dr Desh Raj Sirswal # 8. February 2011, 17:35

Sir thanks bt I had no this type of intention. I just want to say that if we want to know ourself we can see it by our efforts, mostly people dont know their interests, thats why they do not get their ownselves. If we have a clear conception of our ideology or set the targets of life well and prepare according to their requirements then only we can justify ourselves. Everyone should have a clear conception of his life. It is what i want to say. Sorry, if I hurt someone’s feeling or I am not become to explain myself clearly. Thanks and keep in touch.

Moefi (mor air fee) # 8. February 2011, 17:53

...well said, I fully support and comprehend your sentiments wholeheartedly.

Dr Desh Raj Sirswal # 8. February 2011, 18:02

Thanks Sir. I always want to write what I feel in my life. And try to theorize my own experiences. Well thanks always for your nice discussion. Keep thinking
